Some reports in the Hornsby and Kuring-gai Advocate show community involvement in getting the Scouting movement established in Berowra. There is a movement on foot to have some kind of entertainment to raise funds for the 1st Berowra Troop of Boy Scouts. It is a good move to see the Boy Scouts here, and we wish them every success. Their Scout Master is a newcomer to Berowra - Mr Hughes. (Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai Advocate, 15th January 1929, page 4). The first meetings of the Group were held at the home of Evan Hughes' parents in Alan Road. Scouting lasted a few years and then seems to have gone into decline. A Wolf Cub Pack was registered in 1947 and meetings were held on the verandah of the then Berowra Public School building, which is now the Berowra Community Hall (Corner of Crowley and Berowra Waters Roads). These early meetings were held by the light of kerosene lanterns, and the Group had to store all its equipment in a small cupboard at the school. These conditions and the extra care required to prevent damage to school property meant that the Group was soon looking for alternate arrangements, and moves were soon in place to build a Scout Hall. When first registered, the Group was unattached to any Scout District. Apparently in the early days of Scouting only metropolitan Groups were attached to Districts. All outer metropolitan and country Groups were administered by a Commissioner at NSW Branch Headquarters. Later, with the registration of the first Cub Pack in 1947, the Group came under North West Sydney District (North Metropolitan Area). In March 1962 the Scout Association, expecting a large increase in the population of the area from Hornsby Heights to Brooklyn formed the new District of Muogamarra. Muogamarra District covered the geographic area bounded by Hornsby Heights, Asquith, Mt Colah, Mt Kuring-gai, Berowra, Cowan and Brooklyn. In 1974 Muogamarra District was closed and 1st Berowra was re-attached to Hornsby District [REF]. At the time of our attachment to Muogamarra District, the Group's scarf colours were a maroon background with two white border stripes. The Group retained the two white stripes on its scarf when it was re-attached to Hornsby District. Beric Sneddon (youth member 1961-71) recalls that, prior to our attachment to Muogamarra District, the Group scarf was of a brown background with a border of two stripes (yellow and red). The 1st Berowra Group is fortunate to have in its custody the original Muogamarra District Scout flag which was placed in its custody by Mrs Watson (a former District Leader Trainer) of Hornsby Heights. |
