| KANGAROO PACK |
On 12 September 1973 a new Pack was formed. The original Pack then became known as "A" Pack and the new one "B" Pack. "B" Pack closed on 28 May 1975. However a second Pack was re-started in about September 1977 and was known as Kangaroo Pack. It closed in April 1987. Kangaroo Pack met at the Scout Hall on Monday nights between 7.00pm and 8.30pm. Gwen Wood was Akela of Kangaroo Pack and was assisted by Glen Shapter, Peter Guest, Craig Thomas, Christopher Wight, Cynthia Bunyan and Les Roberts. Les (also a former Venturer Leader) was an Assistant Cub Scout Leader (ACSL) with the Pack from 1977 until he transferred to the Scout Troop in 1979. That year (1979) the Pack was runner up in the District Cub Soccer Day. At a combined Hornsby District Swimming Carnival in March 1982 the combined Cub Packs of Berowra beat all comers to win the competition. On one Cub camp David Muir remembers Chris Wight wanted to sleep in late in the morning and wouldn't get up. The Leaders stood outside his tent and poured water back and forth between a billy can and a frying pan. Eventually Chris couldn't resist the call of nature any longer and had to get up. By all accounts he didn't appreciate the ruse to get him out of bed. Les recalls that Chris Wight, Craig Thomas (both ACSLs) and he set a compass course but used back bearings by mistake and lost Gwen and 14 Cub Scouts in the bush. The grass was so tall it was over all their heads, and one of the Cubs had to climb a tree to find a way back. Gwen apparently never quite forgave them. Cub Scouts from Kangaroo Pack were transferred to Dingo Pack when a Leader shortage resulted in its closure in April 1987. |
