WOLF CUBS

The first Wolf Cub Pack was registered on 20th November 1947 with Miss Beryl James (later Mrs Cunningham) as Akela, assisted by Keith "Mang" Smiles of Hornsby as Cub Instructor. That same year Senior Scouts (today known as Venturers) were started internationally. The Pack's application for registration shows there were no Scouts or Rover Scouts registered at that time. The first Pack opened with six boys Max Clark, George Ivanoff, Anthony Laws, Walter Rhodes, Peter Standford and Robert Sullivan (they were later joined by Ian McWhirter). The Pack's first meeting was on 5th July 1947 (four months before registration) and meetings were held at Berowra Public School (now the Berowra Community Hall). In those days the Pack met Saturday afternoons at 2.30pm. In April 1948 the Group Committee from 1st Hornsby Scout Group donated £2 to help the Pack. Miss James was also Lady Cubmaster of the 1st Hornsby Scout Group's Wolf Cub Pack (B Section) at the same time.

Beryl's sister Gwyneth, who was an Assistant Lady Cubmaster with 1st Hornsby Wolf Cub Pack (B Section), and Don Wood (a Rover with 1st Beecroft) assisted when both Berowra and Hornsby Packs had joint activities. In these early days Berowra was part of the North West Sydney District which included the area from Berowra to Eastwood. Contact with 1st Denistone, 1st Normanhurst and 1st Beecroft Scout Groups was established in these early days and a Soccer Day was arranged between 1st Denistone, 1st Hornsby and 1st Berowra for Saturday 9th August 1947. This was followed on 4th October 1947 with a cricket match between the same three Packs. Unfortunately the results of these sports days are not recorded. The cost of a train trip in 1947 from Berowra to Hornsby was 4d and 6d to Denistone. The Group, at that time, wore the District scarf which was brown with a waratah emblem sewn into the V part at the back of the scarf. It probably had the two stripes (yellow and red) referred to earlier.

One of the Pack's earliest Pack Holidays (6th to 7th March 1948) was at Pennant Hills Scout Camp which, coincidentally, was opened the same year our Group was registered - 1929. I wonder what Akela had in mind when she wrote to parents A fully equipped hospital and qualified nursing staff are always available at the camp at no extra charge. The year 1948 was a very busy year for Beryl because, besides the Pack holiday, she undertook her Wood Badge course at Pennant Hills.

Supplies of fresh produce were scarce during the post-war days, and in 1948 the Group ran Egg Drives to supply fresh eggs to Hornsby Hospital. In all 190 dozen eggs were collected that year through the efforts of the Scouts and Guides of Hornsby district.

It appears boys haven't changed much since 1948 when a mother wrote to Akela This is to certify that Walter has been tidy for the last two weeks. I hope it continues. He has also lit the fire under the copper for me on several occasions. Walter, for his efforts, was awarded the appropriate badge on 10th July 1948. Walter joined Wolf Cubs in Hornsby and when Beryl James started a Pack in Berowra he transferred to Berowra. He later went onto Scouts.

Unfortunately the Pack closed on 3 February 1949. The closure was due to the small number of eligible boys and the protracted illness of Mrs Cunningham, who was hospitalised for two months (after the Pack's closure) in the latter part of 1949.
